#MONDAYRECAPFICB The Spiritual Discipline of the Lord’s Supper
In this series break, we are going to look at the spiritual discipline of the Lord’s Supper, or the breaking of bread, or what is now commonly called, the COMMUNION.
1. Jesus commanded this practice.
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-24
Doing communion is obedience to Christ.
2. To be observed by the church.
Now in giving this instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 1 Corinthians 11:17-18
Communion is about connecting with one another.
3. In order to remember Him.
“Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
We remember his body given for us.We remember the new covenant in His blood.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus— he has inaugurated[e] for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)— and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Hebrews 10:19-22
