James 3:9 CSB
[9] With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness.
Reflection:
The tongue is small and just a piece of muscle in our body. But why is it powerful even though it’s just a “PIECE”?
Let me tell you a piece of me. Most of the people who don’t know me well believe that I am cool, kind, generous, soft-spoken, and an encourager. But behind those characteristics they see in me is the opposite of what I believe. I am full of negative thoughts, and those thoughts result in what I speak out, especially to those who are close to me.
This morning, I became the victim again of what I think, and this caused a friend of mine to become disappointed in me. I felt bad, and my thoughts awakened when she voiced what I thought of her. See, what’s the result of how we think? And how powerful are the words we speak? That’s the power of the tongue when it is not used to bless but to speak negatively. We will hurt the people who surround us. Instead of encouraging them, we discourage them. Instead of helping them, we become the reason why they fall. I do hope and pray that when we are tempted to speak out, we first examine whether those words will kill, steal, or destroy the person, or if they will bring victory, hope, and life to them.
Prayer: Lord God, thank you for your words, for they bring life, hope, and encouragement. Forgive us for the words that we have spoken against our enemies, family, and friends. Rebuke us, God, when we think thoughts that are not good towards others. Help us to be instruments of love, peace, and life to the people we are going to talk to and meet. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
