Matthew 26:41 NLT
[41] Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
When Jesus was in Gethsemane, He wanted Peter, John, and James to share in His overwhelming sorrow by letting them stay and keep watch with Him. But He found them sleeping. Jesus then said, “Keep watch and pray.”
This is not the first time that the Lord Jesus reminded His disciples to keep watch. He also said that the disciples must keep watch on His second coming.
Matthew 24:42 NLT
[42] “So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.”
The Lord Jesus was fully aware of His emotional status at that time, as He said to them that His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. But yet He didn’t give up His mission nor disobeyed God’s will. He was watchful not to be consumed by His emotions because of what He suffered but rather prayed to His Father in heaven.
As we live in this broken world, full of emotional turmoil, let us imitate how the Lord Jesus responds to His temptation. He didn’t sin nor fall into temptation because He is wide awake and praying persistently.
Keeping watch means to be on guard; stand firm in the faith, be courageous, and be strong. Let us not be like others, who are asleep but let us be alert and self-controlled.
And we’re not just praying on one occasion but we should devote ourselves daily to praying.
We pray in faith, without doubt. We pray steadfastly, continuously, and scripturally and we pray with thanksgiving. Prayer is our way of communicating with God.
And as the angel from heaven appeared to the Lord Jesus and strengthened him, same as to us, the Holy Spirit will strengthen us and help us not to be consumed by the world’s turmoil but to endure and be victorious. For our Lord Jesus won the victory over death.
Thank you, Lord, for you overcome the world. Thank you that in you we found the way, the truth, and the life. You are worthy to be exalted, to be praised, and to be given honor. All glory belongs to you alone. 🙏
